The Geffen MOCA – Mike Kelley. In the summer of 2019, Los Angeles. So, for my boyfriend and I was the first time in the USA. Therefore we travelled the east coast and during our stay in LA.
We had the opportunity to visit The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. I love to go to museums and I was shocked about the entree fees in some of the other cities we have visited. In conclusion, LA was definitely a museum and gallery friendly city. Landing in LA, I was presently surprised by The Geffen MOCA collection. To clarify, Mike Kelly’s work, in particular, ‘Pay for Pleasure’ touched me profoundly.
Certainly, I have known his work for a long time. Because in Brussels, in the beginning of my studies. Where he had the show and honestly it seemed a bit crap. In addition, I must say his video works are absolutely brilliant. However, I remember a black cat, moving her tail and a long table with loads of small trash on it. But this work really changed my opinion about his work and after that visit, I fell in love with most of his works.
The Geffen MOCA – Mike Kelley first impression
The Geffen MOCA – Mike Kelley exhibition installation consists of a long corridor flanked on both sides by 42 large, colourful poster-like paintings depicting celebrated male poets, philosophers, and artists, with a quotation attributed to each individual above their portrait. The corridor is ending at each iteration with the inclusion of an artwork created by a notorious local criminal.
Most of these works are the portraits and quotes of my personal heroes and inspirations, and I admire the way how he integrated local artists and prisoners to be a part of this impressive work.
Michael “Mike” Kelley (October 27, 1954 in Wayne, Michigan – c. January 31, 2012 in South Pasadena) was an American artist. His work involved found objects, textile banners, drawings, assemblage, collage, performance and video. He often worked collaboratively and had produced projects with artists Paul McCarthy, Tony Oursler and John Miller.
