Destination Unknown Recidency – MaastrichtLab gave me in 2017 the opportunity to create a work. During my residency, I created Maria left this page intentionally blank. As a result, the work was presented from 2 different rooms. On the top floor for the house.
In fact and I wonder if people realised it. I shared my experience of going through this enormous decluttering, trying to find out what I need, want, love and as a result decide to keep.
Firstly I present you the work titled Maria.
This room presented an installation of plastics, sound recording and painted windows. To clarify a cocoon-inspired room. The painted colorful window reminds of a church. As a result, showing colour patterns with the incoming light beams. Supported by a sound piece of my personal prayers. Talking about Maria.
During my prayers, I spoke in my dialect. Which made a big reference to the local faith in the holy mother. I created this space because I felt like I was saying goodbye to my past and welcoming my future.
Secondly, the room titled: Left this page intentionally blank. For instance, this space gives the feeling of diving into a cave. The darkroom, holding a mass of information swallowing the spectator. It wasn’t possible to walk, nor stand correctly in the room.
It wasn’t possible to walk, nor stand correctly in the room.
In order to make order in the chaos. In short, I gave one flashlight to every spectator to create a tunnel vision one particular part of the installation. It refers to the suffocating. In that same vein a feeling that propaganda resembles. Therefore provoking the spectator how to deal with it.
I created this room for two reasons. Firstly, I was not happy with the way I had exposed it before. Because investing all my savings in a work hurts too much to just throw it in a trashcan. Secondly, I was moving, I left most of my belongings, I have been searching through them for months. The simple fact was I had 120m3 for me alone in my hometown. Meanwhile to a 40m3 with two people in Paris. Above all just having a small van of 15m3 to transport everything in a one road trip.
In conclusion, I have been super content to have participated. Even at that moment, I was moving between France and the Netherlands. In short, it made fulltime participation complicated at Destination Unknown Recidency – MaastrichtLab.
The project was great and well organised. The participants and organisers were awesome. From the bottom of my heart, I wish them only the best luck! I have been very happy that they have given me this opportunity.
